Buenos Aires, Argentina

For the sake of simplicity, a desire to live vicariously through people traveling to South America and other reasons, I am writing this blog journal for Ted as he relays his 40-day South American adventure with Alice)

We are here! We had a smooth ten-hour over night flight from the U.S. to Buenos Aires. It is 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2010 - Buenos Aires time (mid-Atlantic time).

First order of business is to get to the hotel - Hotel Roco de Buenos Aires, which was in the older part of town. A word to the wise - don’t take a taxi that has an assistant driver, insist that the driver start the meter immediately after the ride begins and pay only the amount shown on the meter at the end of the trip in pesos. After getting to the hotel, I discovered that not only did we significantly overpay for our taxi ride in U.S dollars, but that three of the 100 peso notes were replaced with 10 peso notes by the quick slight of hand driver.

Hotel Roco de Buenos Aires is a beautifully restored classic town house with an open courtyard interior. The room was simple, clean and had a comfortable bed. The room had free wireless and a flat screen TV with international cable including CNN and BBC, We are good to go!

Friday evening dinner was at Lo de Rosendo, a restaurant recommended by the hotel owner and only a short walk from the hotel. Dinner was ojo de bife mechando, (eye of steak) topped with glazed onions and prunes. Delicious! I had a Schneider Cervesa (local beer) and Alice had an Argentina red wine with flan for dessert. About $24 dollars, or $82 pesos. Time for a good night’s rest.
